JAR AND ADDITIVES
1 quart(s) wide-mouth canning jar
1 - dog biscuit cookie cutter
16 - inches pretty doggy themed ribbon
1 - envelope, with a hole punched in the upper left hand corner
IN JAR PLACE
1 cup(s) all-purpose unbleached flour
1 cup(s) whole wheat flour
1/2 cup(s) yellow cornmeal
1/2 cup(s) instant nonfat dry milk powder
1 teaspoon(s) brown or granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon(s) garlic powder (more if used as a flea deterrent )
1 pinch(es) salt

Steps:

  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine: the flours, cornmeal, milk powder, sugar, garlic powder and salt. Using a funnel, pour dry ingredients into the jar. Close jar tightly. Tie dog biscuit cookie cutter and instruction card around the top of the card with a pretty ribbon.
  • Type baking instructions (see below) on a pretty piece of paper or card and tuck inside the envelope.
  • Doggy Biscuits: Position a rack in the center of the oven. Heat it to 250 degrees F. Place Doggy Biscuits mix ingredients in a medium size bowl. Add 1 large egg, 1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, and 1/4 to 1/2 cup (or more) hot chicken broth, beef broth or very hot water. Make a dough that is very heavy, but not sticky. Add more flour or water, 1 teaspoon at a time if dough is too moist (use flour) or too dry (use hot water). Turn out dough onto a floured pastry cloth and knead 8 to 10 times until elastic. Let dough rest for 5 minutes. Roll out dough 1/2 of an inch thick and cut with a dog-bone shaped cutter. Place cookies close together as they will not spread. Bake for 1 hour. Rotate the baking trays in the oven (turn tray around 180 degrees F), and bake them another half hour. Cool the cookies in the pan for 1 minute, then transfer to a wire cake rack to cool completely.

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
2 cups bulgur
1 cup cornmeal
½ cup dry milk powder
4 teaspoons salt
1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
¼ cup warm water
2 ½ cups chicken broth
1 egg
1 tablespoon milk

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Dissolve yeast in warm water until foamy, about 10 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, stir together the all-purpose, whole wheat, and rye flours with the bulgur, cornmeal and powdered milk. Stir in the yeast mixture, salt and chicken broth to form a stiff dough. Add more broth if necessary to hold dough together. Roll dough out to 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes using a cookie cutter. Place biscuits 1 inch apart onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Combine the egg and milk; brush onto the tops of the biscuits.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, then turn off the oven and let the biscuits sit in the closed oven overnight to become extra hard and crunchy.

1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cornmeal
½ cup rolled oats
1 ½ cups water, or as needed
½ cup canola oil
2 large eggs eggs
3 tablespoons peanut butter
2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  • Mix together whole-wheat flour, all-purpose flour, cornmeal and oats. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and gradually pour in water, oil, eggs, peanut butter and vanilla. Mix well.
  • On a flat surface use a rolling pin to roll out the dough. Cut the dough into dog biscuit shapes using a cookie cutter. Place the biscuits onto the prepared cookie sheet.
  • Bake the cookies for 20 minutes. After the biscuits have cooked 20 minutes turn off the oven off but let the biscuits remain inside the oven for another 20 minutes to harden.

Steps:

  • You will need 16" of pretty ribbon.
  • 1 large envelope, with a hole punched in left hand corner,.
  • dog bone biscuit cutter, to attach to jar.
  • TYPE BAKING INSTRUCTIONS ON A PRETTY PIECE OF PAPER AND TUCK INSIDE THE ENVELOPE.
