SWEET JAMAICAN FESTIVAL DUMPLING

You will love the sweet taste of Jamaican festival dumpling.

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 Cups Plain flour
½ Cup Fine yellow cornmeal
½ tsp Salt
3 ½ tbsp Brown sugar
1 tbsp Baking powder
¼ Cup Milk (I use oats milk)
½ Cup Water
2 Cups Cooking oil

Steps:

  • Add the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and sugar to a mixing bowl and combine these dry ingredients well.
  • When the dry ingredients are all evenly combined, mix the water and the milk and start adding it little by little to the dry ingredients. Knead until if form a soft dough. (A soft dough but not paste like).
  • Add the oil to a deep frying pan and heat on medium to low fire.
  • When the oil is hot, divide the dough into smaller portions and roll it in the palm of your hands to form it into an oval like shape.
  • Place the dough one at a time into the heated oil. Constantly turn dumplings so that it cooks on all sides.
  • Once the dumplings get golden brown, remove from the oil.

We had these in Jamaica and they were served with spicy foods (to cool them down). My son wanted them for breakfast since they are slightly sweet. We loved them. I found this recipe at Jamaicans.com and made it with a spicy Jamaican Jerk meatloaf recipe. You tone down the sweetness by cutting down on the sugar.

1 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
2/3 cup water
vegetable oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, and cornmeal and combine.
  • Add the sugar and stir.
  • Add the vanilla to the water, and then add the mixture to the dry ingredients, binding to form a soft dough.
  • Knead lightly.
  • Leave covered for about 1/2 an hour. Divide the dough into eight portions.
  • Flour hands.
  • Knead lightly, then roll and pull each portion to form a 6 inch x 1 1/2 inch length, about 1/8 in thick. You can make shorter ones too.
  • Deep fry in hot oil until golden brown. Driain on paper towels.

This Jamaican Festival recipe is a homemade version of the popular Jamaican snack. Made with a few simple ingredients, this delicious fried sweet dough is the perfect side dish for your favorite Jamaican recipes.

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ cup fine cornmeal
6 Tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup milk (a little less or more may be needed, see notes)
Oil for deep frying*

Steps:

  • Heat a heavy bottom pot of oil that has at least 3 inches of oil in it or use a deep fryer if you have one. Turn the heat over medium heat until the temperature reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Add the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt to a large bowl and stir to combine.
  • Add the vanilla extract and milk and stir until the dough comes together. Then use your hands to lightly form the mixture into a ball.
  • Pinch off pieces of dough and roll them into long oval shapes. Make about 12 dumplings.
  • Once the oil has reached the temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit, fry the dough on all sides, until golden brown. This should take about 4-6 minutes.
  • Remove dough and drain off any excess grease. Serve and enjoy.

1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
Cold water, enough to make a stiff dough
Oil for frying

Steps:

  • To make this festival recipe, mix the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Add just enough cold water to make a stiff dough. Flour your hands well and knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for just a minute or so. Divide the dough into 12 portions. Roll each portion into a small cigar or sausage shape that's somewhat tapered at the ends. Pour enough oil into a skillet to reach about 1 inch deep. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until shimmering but not smoking. Carefully slide a few of the dumplings into the oil and fry, turning as necessary, until golden brown on each side, adjusting the heat if necessary, about 8 minutes total. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Repeat with the remaining fritters. Eat 'em hot.

4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons salt
½ cup butter
½ cup cold water
1 cup vegetable oil for frying

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt. Rub in the butter until it is in pieces no larger than peas. Mix in water 1 tablespoon at a time just until the mixture is wet enough to form into a ball. The dough should be a firm consistency. Knead briefly.
  • Heat the oil in a large heavy skillet over medium heat until hot. Break off pieces of the dough and shape into a patty - kind of like a flat biscuit. Place just enough of the dumplings in the pan so they are not crowded. Fry on each side until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels before serving.
