Sausage, Mushroom & Spinach Pizza Braid image

An Italian-inspired pizza braid is elevated with a delicious combination of sausage, mushrooms, spinach and a little mozzarella cheese. This dinner is made extra easy with help from Pillsbury™ refrigerated crescent dough sheet.

1/2 lb bulk mild Italian sausage
1 package (8 oz) sliced baby bella mushrooms
2 cups chopped fresh spinach leaves (from 8-oz package)
1/2 cup pizza sauce (from 14-oz jar)
1 can (8 oz) refrigerated Pillsbury™ Original Crescent Dough Sheet
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (4 oz)
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F. Spray large cookie sheet with cooking spray, or line with cooking parchment paper.
  • In 10-inch nonstick skillet, cook Italian sausage 6 to 8 minutes over medium heat, until no longer pink; drain. Stir in mushrooms; cook 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms are lightly browned and tender. Stir in spinach leaves; cook until just starting to wilt. Remove from heat; stir in pizza sauce.
  • Unroll dough on cookie sheet to 13x8-inch rectangle. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the cheese in 3 1/2-inch-wide strip lengthwise down center of dough all the way to ends; top cheese with sausage mixture. Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup cheese.
  • Make cuts 1 inch apart on each side of rectangle just to edge of filling. Alternating from side to side, fold cut strips of dough at an angle halfway across filling, slightly overlapping ends.
  • In small microwavable bowl, microwave butter uncovered on High 20 to 30 seconds or until melted; stir in Italian seasoning. Brush butter mixture on top of braided crescent dough.
  • Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until deep golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Serve with additional pizza sauce, if desired.

2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast
1-1/4 cups warm water (110° to 115°)
2 tablespoons sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 large egg
1/4 cup butter, softened
4 to 4-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 pound bulk spicy pork sausage
1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella or cheddar cheese
GLAZE:
1 large egg

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add sugar, salt, Italian seasoning, 1 egg, butter and 2 cups flour; beat until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. , Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. , Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook sausage until no longer pink; drain and set aside to cool. , Punch the dough down; divide in half. On a floured surface, roll each half into a 14x12-in. rectangle. Cut each one into three 14x4-in. strips. Combine cheese and sausage; spoon 1/2 cup down the center of each strip. Bring long edges together over filling; pinch to seal. , Place three strips with seam side down on greased baking sheets. Braid strips together; secure ends. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. , Beat remaining egg and brush over loaves. Bake at 400° for 20-25 minutes or until golden. Immediately remove from baking sheets to wire racks. 1 lb bulk mild Italian sausage
1 medium onion, chopped (1 cup)
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 bag (5 oz) baby spinach
6 eggs
1 cup heavy whipping cream
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 375°F. Bake crescent rolls as directed on cans. Remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. Cool completely, at least 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook sausage over medium-high heat 7 to 9 minutes or until no longer pink; drain. Reduce heat to medium. Add onion, garlic and pepper flakes; cook 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are softened. Add half of the spinach; cook and stir 1 to 2 minutes or until spinach has wilted. Repeat with remaining half of spinach.
  • Spray 13x9-inch (3-quart) baking dish with cooking spray. Cut or tear each cooled crescent roll into 3 pieces, and place in baking dish. Arrange sausage mixture over crescent pieces in baking dish.
  • In medium bowl, beat eggs, whipping cream, 1/2 cup of the Parmesan cheese, the salt and pepper. Pour over crescent pieces and sausage mixture in dish; carefully stir to distribute mixture and coat with egg mixture.
  • Sprinkle remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese over top. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown and knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

Through the years, my mom filled butter horns with everything, from fruit, to seafood, to meats and all sorts of nuts and raisins. I always got a kick out of trying to guess what was in them. 3-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
2 cups warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup mashed potato flakes
1 cup butter, softened

7 to 8 cups all-purpose flour
12 ounces bulk Italian sausage
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
FINISHING:
1 large egg, beaten

1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

I modified this from a Pillsbury site. Play with the type of sausage and cheeses. Food.com had trouble reading 1 8 oz can Pillsbury® refrigerated crescent dinner rolls or 1 8 oz can Pillsbury® Crescent Recipe Creations® refrigerated seamless dough sheet so I just put in dough.

1/2 lb sausage (Italian, spicy or other sausage bulk or out of skin)
9 ounces spinach, chopped and thawed then squeezed to drain (fresh would be nice)
1 cup cottage cheese, drained if moist
1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
1 teaspoon garlic, minced
bread dough (try Buttery Soft Crescent Rolls or Crescent Roll Dough (Bread Machine))
provolone cheese
mozzarella cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F
  • Cook sausage in a skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently. Then drain.
  • In large bowl, mix spinach, cottage cheese, Parmesan cheese, garlic and cooked sausage.
  • Press dough into 13x8-inch rectangle, seal seams, if any. I like to do this on top of silpat so it is easy to put on the baking pan.
  • Spoon sausage mixture in 4-inch-wide strip lengthwise down center of rectangle.
  • Top with slices of both cheeses.
  • With scissors or sharp knife, make cuts 1 inch apart on long sides of dough rectangle to within 1/2 inch of sausage mixture. Fold strips of dough up over sausage mixture to meet in center; pinch to seal.
  • Bake 18 to 24 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet; cut into crosswise slices.
  • Serve warm.
