Cube steak with mushroom gravy is a hearty and inexpensive family dinner featuring tender seasoned cubed steak smothered in a luxurious brown gravy.

1/4 cup Cooking Oil
3-4 cuts Cube Steak ((1-2 pounds))
Salt
Ground Black Pepper
1/2 cup Flour
1/2 teaspoon Paprika
1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon Onion powder
2 cups low-sodium Beef Broth
1 tablespoon Worcestershire
1 tablespoon low sodium Soy Sauce
8 oz fresh Mushrooms ((sliced))
1/4 cup Flour
1/4 cup Butter
1-2 cups low sodium beef broth ((as needed))
Salt as needed

Steps:

  • Place flour, paprika, onion, and garlic powder in a dish and mix to combine.
  • Season cube steaks with salt and pepper on both sides and dredge in flour mixture.
  • Heat oil in a large 12" skillet on medium heat. Once oil is shimmering add cube steaks and brown on each side.*
  • Once cubed steaks have browned add low sodium beef broth, Worcestershire, soy sauce, and sliced mushrooms. Cover and simmer on low for two hours.**
  • After two hours, remove cube steaks from the skillet and set aside. Pour remaining liquid and mushrooms through a strainer to separate, reserving the liquid in a bowl.
  • Prepare the gravy by melting butter in the skillet, once melted sprinkle in flour and whisk to combine to form a roux. Continue whisking to prevent flour from burning until the mixture begins to darken slightly (2-4 minutes).
  • Measure the reserved liquid previously set aside from simmering cubed steaks. Add additional low sodium beef broth to the reserved liquid so the total liquid equals 2 cups.***
  • A little at a time add the liquid to the flour/butter mixture, whisking to incorporate before more is added. Adding too much at once will create lumpy gravy.
  • Once all of the liquid has been incorporated, return cube steaks and mushrooms to the skillet. Simmer as needed to thicken the gravy and taste for salt and pepper, add more as needed.
  • Serve cube steaks topped with mushrooms and gravy.

This recipe is for one serving, but it's easy to adjust the amount or substitute to your liking....instructions for gravy are included in the directions.

2 cube steaks
5 -10 large sliced fresh mushrooms
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon italian seasoning
salt and pepper
1 teaspoon olive oil
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 minced garlic cloves
salt and pepper

Steps:

  • Make marinade and put with cube steaks in a zip bag. Marinate in the ice box (refrigerator) for an hour, but it is much better longer.
  • Remove the cube steaks from the marinade, and sprinkle garlic powder and Italian seasoning on both top and bottom.
  • Brown cube steaks on each side, set aside.
  • To the drippings, add 1 tbsp of flour, 2 pats of butter and a splash of white wine to deglaze the pan. Stir constantly, adding mushrooms and cube steaks. Simmer for 10-15 minutes over medium heat.
  • Serve with vegetables and warm bread or rolls.

This mouthwatering good cube steak recipe is lightly breaded pan fried cube steaks smothered in an easy mushroom onion gravy.

4 cube steaks
¼ cup flour
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 ½ tablespoons olive oil
¼ cup butter
1 medium onion chopped
8 ounces mushrooms
2 cloves garlic minced
2 cups low sodium beef broth (reserve ¼ cup)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
1 tablespoon fresh thyme (or parsley)
1 tablespoon cornstarch
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Stir together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper on a deep plate. Dredge the cube steaks through the flour mixture. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the breaded cube steaks until browned on both sides and until they reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees. Plate the cube steaks.
  • Using the same skillet melt the butter over medium high heat. Add the mushrooms and onions and cook until the mushrooms brown and onions soften; about 8-10 minutes. Reduce the heat to low and add the garlic cooking for a minute while stirring constantly. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and plate.
  • Pour in the beef broth (reserve 1/4 cup). Use a spoon to loosen any brown bits on the bottom of the skillet. Add the Worcestershire Sauce and fresh thyme. Then whisk together the reserved beef broth and cornstarch and whisk it into the skillet. Bring it to a low boil. Then simmer the gravy until thickened whisking several times.
  • Add the mushrooms, onions, and cooked cube steaks back to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Finally season with salt, pepper, and more thyme if desired.

6 beef cube steaks (4 ounces each)
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 large onion, sliced and separated into rings
3 cups water, divided
1 envelope brown gravy mix
1 envelope mushroom gravy mix

Hot mashed potatoes or cooked noodles

This is one of the first recipes I learned to cook when I was a teenager. Mom taught me to cook over the phone, after I got home from school every day. She was working and I didn't think about it at the time, but later I realized my calls were reassuring to her, since she knew I was safely home. Even when Mom told me how to do it, I nearly always tweaked it! Most of the time, it turned out okay. Mashed potatoes and biscuits are perfect with this, along with a vegetable.

1 (2 1/2 pound) tenderized round steak, cut into 6 pieces
salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 cup all-purpose flour, divided
1 teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
½ cup cooking oil, divided
1 large onion, sliced
1 cup water
1 teaspoon beef base (such as Better than Bouillon®)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups milk

Steps:

  • Sprinkle each side of the round steak pieces with salt and pepper, rubbing seasoning into the meat.
  • Combine 1/2 cup flour and garlic powder in a 1-gallon resealable bag. Add steak pieces, seal bag, and shake to evenly coat all the pieces.
  • Heat 1/3 cup of oil in a large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add seasoned and floured steak pieces to the skillet in a single layer in batches and cook until browned, 4 to 5 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and keep warm. Repeat with remaining pieces, adding more oil, if necessary, until all are browned.
  • Add onion slices to the same skillet and stir, coating onions with pan drippings, until onion slices have separated and are just beginning to soften, about 2 minutes. Move onions to one side of the skillet and return browned steak pieces to the skillet. Spread steak evenly in the skillet and place onions on top.
  • Stir together water, beef base, and Worcestershire sauce in a microwave-safe container. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stir, and pour into the skillet. Cover, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook until the steak is tender, about 45 minutes.
  • Remove the steak from the skillet and add reserved 1/2 cup of flour to the pan drippings. Increase heat to medium; stir briskly and cook until bubbly, 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Stir in milk and keep stirring until gravy bubbles again. Return steak, onions, and any accumulated juices to the skillet, cover, and reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until flavors are well combined, about 10 minutes.
