Time 9h42m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 18

10 cups water, or more as needed
½ pound baby carrots
½ pound celery stalks, cut in thirds
1 large overripe tomato, punctured with a knife
1 large onion, peeled and quartered
1 meaty ham bone
3 cloves garlic, diced
2 bay leaves
1 tablespoon butter
½ pound baby carrots, thinly sliced
1 red onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, diced
1 cup dry white wine
1 pound split peas, picked over
2 russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
2 (1.41 ounce) packages sazon seasoning (such as Goya®)
2 teaspoons ground pepper, or more to taste
sea salt to taste

Steps:

  • Combine water, 1/2 pound baby carrots, celery, tomato, quartered onion, ham bone, 3 cloves garlic, and bay leaves in a large stockpot. Bring stock to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 3 hours.
  • Remove 1 1/2 to 2 cups of the ham meat from the bone, dice, and set aside for use in the soup. Pour stock through a strainer and discard solids. Transfer stock to a covered container and refrigerate until fat rises to the top and solidifies, 1 to 3 hours.
  • Skim off fat and pour stock into a slow cooker.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan and add sliced baby carrots, red onion, and 3 cloves diced garlic. Cook and stir until browned, 7 to 8 minutes. Pour wine into the pan and bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Add to the slow cooker.
  • Rinse and drain split peas and add to the slow cooker. Add reserved ham meat, potatoes, sazon seasoning, black pepper, and salt. Stir. Cook on High until soup is thickened, 5 to 6 hours.
  • Transfer about 1/3 of the soup to a blender. Cover and hold lid down with a potholder; pulse a few times before leaving on to blend. Return puree to the slow cooker and stir.

SPLIT PEA SOUP WITH HAM

Split Pea Soup with Ham image

You'll turn to this split pea soup with ham all winter long-especially when you need to warm up! Use leftover ham to make split pea soup prep even easier.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Soups, Stews & Stocks     Soup Recipes

Time 1h10m

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 chopped medium onion
4 carrots, thinly sliced
3 celery stalks, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 can (14.5 ounces) reduced-sodium chicken broth
1 bag (16 ounces) green split peas, picked over and rinsed
Ham bone plus 2 cups reserved ham from the recipe Glazed Ham with Apricot-Mustard Sauce, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
2 tablespoons butter
4 slices whole-wheat sandwich bread, crusts removed, cut into 1/4-inch cubes
1 to 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven or 5-quart heavy pot with a lid, heat oil over medium. Add onion, carrots, celery, and thyme; season with salt and pepper. Cook until vegetables begin to soften, 5 to 8 minutes.
  • Add broth, split peas, ham bone, and 5 cups water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and partially cover; simmer until peas are soft, 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, make croutons: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add bread and cook, tossing occasionally, until browned and crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate.
  • Remove and discard bone from soup. Working in batches, puree only 1/2 the soup in a blender (don't overfill); return to pot. Add ham cubes, and simmer until heated through. If necessary, thin with water. Add salt, pepper, and lemon juice to taste. Serve topped with croutons.

LEFTOVER HOLIDAY HAM & SPLIT PEA SOUP

Leftover Holiday Ham & Split Pea Soup image

I make this every time I make a holiday ham to use up the leftovers. It smells so wonderful as it cooks and pleases even the so-called pea haters in my family. Simple to prepare too..just chop all your veggies and ham up and toss everything into the pot and cook. No need to soak the peas overnight..just a rinse and drain before cooking.

Provided by HeatherFeather

Categories     Ham

Time 1h45m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 (16 -20 ounce) package dried split peas, green, rinsed
8 cups water
2 medium potatoes, peeled, cubed
2 medium onions, peeled and chopped
2 large carrots, peeled and chopped
2 stalks celery, washed and chopped
2 cups cooked ham, trimmed of fat, diced
4 -5 teaspoons chicken bouillon powder or 4 chicken bouillon cubes
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1 teaspoon dried sage
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, to taste
1/4-1/2 teaspoon salt, to taste (optional)

Steps:

  • Chop veggies and meat, then combine everything in a large stockpot -- going VERY EASY on the salt as your ham and bouillon might be salty enough already (you will test and add more later if needed).
  • Stir, then bring to a boil over high heat.
  • Don't walk away from the pot.as soon as it comes to a boil, stir, then lower the heat to low and drop a lid on the pot, venting just a bit for a few minutes so you don't have a boilover.
  • As soon as the temperature drops enough to avoid a boilover (a few minutes), go ahead and let the lid sit fully on top of the pan.
  • Let cook on low, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours, stirring once or twice, until all veggies are tender.
  • Give the finished soup a taste test and adjust salt and other seasonings as needed.

SPLIT PEA WITH HAM SOUP

Split Pea With Ham Soup image

A classic recipe, but I've tweaked a little to make it healthy and paleo-friendly. Perfect use for a leftover ham bone (leave plenty of meat on it!), but you can also just used diced ham. This recipe takes an hour to cook, but comes together very quickly so it can work for a weeknight meal.

Provided by profken

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 1h15m

Yield 8 cups, 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 (12 ounce) bag split peas
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
2 large carrots, diced (or 3 medium)
1 (32 ounce) carton chicken stock, plus 2 cups water
1 ham bone, with plenty of meat left on it (or 2 cups diced ham)
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Put the peas into a strainer and rinse until the water coming out of the bottom is clear. Pick over to ensure that there are no twigs or small rocks in there.
  • Heat olive oil in a stock pot or dutch oven. Saute the onion and celery until soft, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the stock and water to the pot and bring to a boil. It's OK if the ratio isn't precise since cartons of stock seem to come in different sizes these days. Just make sure you have 6 cups of liquid in total.
  • Add ham bone, bay leaves, rosemary, and thyme. Partially cover and simmer for 1/2 hour.
  • Add carrots and diced ham (if you are using it). Partially cover and simmer for another 1/2 hour, or until peas are soft.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
