For years, my mother made this savory-sweet bean dish. I was always thrilled when it was on the menu, and now I serve it often to my own family. You can vary the types of beans used, if you wish. -Heather Biedler Laura, Illinois

1 can (16 ounces) pork and beans, undrained
1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (16 ounces) chili beans, undrained
1 can (15-1/2 ounces) great northern beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (14-1/2 ounces) cut wax beans, drained
1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1-1/2 cups cubed fully cooked ham
1-1/2 cups cubed cheddar cheese
1/2 cup ketchup
1 small onion, chopped
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Transfer to a greased shallow 3-qt. baking dish. , Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1 hour or until bubbly and heated through.

My great-aunt made this for a family gathering and it's been a hit ever since, even with the kids! The water chestnuts add a different texture and my husband has even used whole baby carrots instead of shredded carrot. Easy and fast to make and a good way to use up all that squash from the garden!

2 cups sliced yellow squash
1 cup sliced zucchini
1 onion, chopped
¼ cup sliced green onion
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt, divided
2 cups crushed buttery round crackers
½ cup melted butter
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 (8 ounce) can sliced water chestnuts, drained
1 large carrot, shredded
½ cup mayonnaise
½ (4 ounce) jar diced pimento peppers, drained
1 teaspoon sage
½ teaspoon white pepper
1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large saucepan combine yellow squash, zucchini, onion, green onion, water and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cover and cook over medium heat about 6 minutes. Drain well and set aside.
  • In a medium bowl combine cracker crumbs and butter. Mix well and spread half of the mixture into the bottom of a 9x13 inch casserole dish.
  • In a large bowl combine soup, water chestnuts, carrots, mayonnaise, pimentos, sage, pepper and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Fold in squash mixture and spoon over crumb crust. Sprinkle cheese on top, and then the remaining cracker crumbs.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes, or until firm and heated through.

1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, undrained
1 (16 ounce) can baked beans with pork
1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, undrained
½ cup ketchup
2 teaspoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
¾ cup packed brown sugar
1 pound lean ground beef
4 ounces bacon, chopped
½ cup chopped onion
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • In a large skillet over medium heat, fry the ground beef, bacon and onion together until ground beef is no longer pink. Drain fat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the kidney beans, baked beans with pork and butter beans. Stir in the ketchup, white vinegar, dry mustard, brown sugar and cook beef mixture. Mix thoroughly, adding salt and pepper to taste.
  • Pour the bean and meat mixture into a 9x13 inch baking dish. Bake in preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes.

This is one of my favorite cookout side dishs! My Aunt Char makes these all the time and I finaly got the recipe from her! They are a great side dish with hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad...the list goes on and they are yummy!

1 lb ground beef
6 slices bacon
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
2 teaspoons vinegar
3/4 cup brown sugar (packed)
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans
1 (15 ounce) can pork and beans
1 (15 ounce) can butter beans

Steps:

  • Fry bacon until crisp.
  • Drain.
  • Fry ground beef in fat until tender.
  • Combine onion, ketchup, salt, mustard, vinegar, brown sugar, and partly drain beans in a 3 quart oven container.
  • Mix well.
  • Add hamburger and crumbled bacon.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

1/2 pound sliced bacon, diced
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 can (16 ounces) pork and beans

1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can lima beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup white vinegar
1 large yellow onion
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 lb bacon
1 lb ground beef or 1 lb ground turkey

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef and turkey with the chopped onion in a pan.
  • In a separate pan saute' bacon until done (not crispy).
  • Drain the meat and bacon from the grease and place in a casserole dish or crock pot.
  • Add all other ingredients and mix together.
  • Bake for 1 hour at 350°F or slow cook in a crock pot on low for 4-6 hours.
  • Freeze any leftovers.

Add milk stirring until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture boils and thickens. Add cheese and continue cooking and stirring 1 minute longer.
