2 ounces strawberry daiquiri mix or strawberry purée
1 ounce fresh lime juice
2 ounces low-fat coconut milk
2 ounces coconut rum
2 ounce blue curaçao
2 teaspoons blue sanding sugar

Steps:

  • In a measuring cup or cocktail shaker, combine the strawberry daiquiri mix and lime juice. Stir and set aside.
  • In a measuring cup or cocktail shaker, combine the coconut milk and coconut rum. Stir and set aside.
  • Pour 1 ounce of the blue curaçao on a small plate. Pour the sanding sugar on a second plate. Dip the rim of a highball glass into the blue curaçao and then into the sanding sugar to rim the glass.
  • Pour the strawberry mixture into the glass and fill the glass with crushed ice, being careful not to mess up the sugared rim. Pour the coconut milk mixture into the glass on top of the strawberry mixture. Top with the remaining ounce blue curaçao. Add a straw and serve.

18 egg yolks
1 fifth Cognac
1 pint dark rum
3/4 pint peach brandy
1/2 pint applejack
1 1/2 pounds confectioners' sugar
3 quarts milk
2 cups heavy cream
18 egg whites, lightly beaten

Steps:

  • Beat the egg yolks until they are thick and pale. Add Cognac, dark rum, peach brandy, and applejack. Stir in confectioners' sugar and blend well. Add milk and heavy cream and refrigerate the eggnog for at least 5 hours. Before serving, fold in egg whites.

Aaron Goldfarb, a liquor writer who was raised Jewish, was not introduced to the joys of eggnog until he married a woman who loved Christmas. Making a batch of homemade eggnog became his self-designated duty at their annual Christmas party in Park Slope, Brooklyn. For the spirits, Mr. Goldfarb prefers Maker's Mark or another bourbon with a heavy wheat content, which lends sweetness. He also cautions against using spiced rum, as he feels the spirits involved already possess enough intrinsic baking-spice qualities. Mr. Goldfarb loves a slightly aged nog; see Tip for his advice.

8 large eggs
4 cups whole milk
2 cups heavy cream
2/3 cup granulated sugar
4 ounces bourbon
4 ounces dark rum
4 ounces Cognac or apple brandy
Whole nutmeg, for garnish

Steps:

  • Separate the egg yolks from the whites. In a stand mixer, beat the whites on high speed until transformed into a meringue-like consistency with soft peaks.
  • In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the milk, cream, sugar, bourbon, rum and Cognac or brandy until a smooth texture is achieved. Gently fold in the beaten egg whites until combined.
  • Transfer eggnog into a large serving bowl. Chill overnight in the refrigerator before serving.
  • To serve, ladle a few ounces into a mug or glass and grate fresh nutmeg over the surface. For ideal flavor, mix will keep in the refrigerator up to two weeks, but can last longer.

  • Beat the egg yolks well until they turn light in color, adding 1/2 cup of the sugar as you beat. Add the milk, cream, and liquor. Then beat the egg whites with the remaining sugar until they peak. Fold the whites into the mixture. Grate the fresh nutmeg over the drink.
