This is my favorite new way to enjoy summer cantaloupe. And it's a great way to cool off in summer! Growing mint is rather easy too. We have some in a large pot, and it comes back each year in full force with almost no effort on our part.

- Scoop the fruit into blender, then add water, sugar, and lime. Blend until smooth.
- Add more water, if necessary, to achieve a light, easy-to-drink consistency.
- Taste and season with more sugar and lime if you think necessary.

- In a small heatproof bowl, pour 1/2 cup boiling water over sugar and basil; stir until sugar has dissolved. Let cool completely, about 20 minutes. Strain syrup into a blender; discard basil.
- Add cantaloupe, grapefruit juice, and 1 3/4 cups cold water; blend until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve.
- Serve over ice, garnished with a basil sprig, or refrigerate in an airtight container up to 3 days. If using vodka, stir a shot (1-ounce) into each glass before serving.

- With a vegetable peeler remove zest from lime in strips. In a saucepan simmer water, zest, mint, and sugar, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes. Remove pan from heat and let mixture stand 15 minutes. Pour mixture through a sieve into a bowl, pressing hard on solids, and discard solids. Cool syrup to room temperature.
- Halve and seed cantaloupe. Working in 2 batches, scoop flesh into a blender and purée with syrup until smooth, transferring to a large bowl as pur ed. Stir in wine. Chill soup, covered, until cold, at least 2 hours, and up to 1 day. Skim any foam from top. Serve soup garnished with mint.
