HOMEMADE FRENCH ONION DIP

Homemade French Onion Dip image

Recipe video above. Classic French Onion Dip - made at home! The key to the amazing flavour base is to cook the onions slowly because they sweeten and caramelise.

Provided by Nagi | RecipeTin Eats

Categories     Dip     Party Food

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 tbsp butter
2 1/2 cups diced onions ((2 to 3 onions) (brown, yellow or white))
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
4 oz / 120 g cream cheese ((cold), cut into cubes)
1/4 cup whole egg mayonnaise
1/2 cup sour cream ((full fat is best, but you can use low fat or even yoghurt))

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a fry pan over medium heat.
  • Add the onions, salt, pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring. Then reduce the heat to medium low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should be sweet and golden. Remove from stove and allow to cool.
  • Place the cream cheese, sour cream and mayo in a bowl, mix until smooth (use microwave in 10 sec bursts if needed to assist)
  • Add the caramelised onions. Mix until just combined. Refrigerate at least 2 hours to allow flavours to develope, overnight is better!
  • Serve at room temperature, garnished with chopped chives if desired. Best served with crinkle cut plain potato chips!

OLD FASHIONED ONION RINGS

Old Fashioned Onion Rings image

This is an actual recipe from a former employee of a popular drive-in restaurant. Crispy coated onion rings like the pro's make!

Provided by JeanieMomof3

Categories     Onion Side Dishes

Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

  • Drain the tofu from the package water and place in a nut milk or bamboo steamer cloth or wrap in a clean dish cloth and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. You should have about 1 1/4 cups of strained tofu.
  • To a high-powered blender, add the tofu with the sour cream, mayonnaise, shallot, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, onion powder, dehydrated onion, vegetable broth powder, sea salt, and black pepper.
  • Blend until very, very smooth, about 5 minutes. You may need to use the baton to move the mixture closer to the blade while blending or stop the blender and push the mixture off the sides with a spatula a few times in between blending.
  • Scrape into a bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving with the potato chips. It’s best served after refrigeration, but if you can’t wait, it can still be eaten immediately.
