To come up with this dish, I used a number of different recipes, plus some ideas of my own. It's great for a potluck because it's made the night before and the flavor keeps getting better. Whenever I serve it, I'm inundated with recipe requests. -Ruth Lovett, Bay City, Texas

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 medium head cabbage, shredded
1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 cup chopped sweet red pepper
1/2 cup sliced pimiento-stuffed olives
1/2 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon mustard seed

Steps:

  • Combine cabbage, onion, peppers and olives. In a large saucepan, mix remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Cook and stir 1 minute. Pour over vegetables, and stir gently. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Mix well before serving.

1 medium cabbage, shredded
1 small onion, grated
1 medium bell pepper, chopped
2 carrots, grated
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup vinegar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Combine cabbage, onion, green pepper, and carrots in a large bowl and sprinkle with sugar. Set aside. Combine remaining ingredients in a pot and boil 3 minutes. Pour over vegetables, stirring well. Chill overnight. Enjoy.

1/2 cup sugar
4 -6 green onions, sliced
3/4 cup white vinegar
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon celery seed
3/4 cup oil
1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Steps:

  • Shred the cabbage and place in bowl. Sprinkle with sliced green onion. Then sprinkle with 1/2 c sugar.
  • In a saucepan mix vinegar, 1 tbsp sugar, salt, celery seed and mustard; bring to boil; add oil.
  • Pour over cabbage. DO NOT STIR.
  • Put in refrigerator overnight.

1 red onion, thinly sliced
½ cup chopped green bell pepper
½ cup chopped red bell pepper
½ cup shredded carrots
½ cup sliced pimiento-stuffed olives
½ cup white wine vinegar
½ cup canola oil
½ cup white sugar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon celery seed
1 teaspoon mustard seed

Steps:

  • Mix cabbage, onion, green bell pepper, red bell pepper, carrots, and olives together in a large bowl.
  • Whisk vinegar, oil, sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, celery seed, and mustard seed together in a saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook and stir until sugar is dissolved, about 1 minute. Pour hot dressing over cabbage mixture and toss gently. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight.

36 cups cabbage, shredded (about 4 large heads)
8 cups red cabbage, shredded
4 cups sweet onions, sliced
8 medium carrots, shredded
5 1/3 cups vinegar
2 2/3 cups vegetable oil
2 cups granulated sugar
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons pepper

Steps:

  • Place all the vegetables in a large bowl with a tight fitting cover. Combine all the dressing ingredients and mix well using a blender or a whisk. Pour over the vegetables, stirring to combine. Cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving. At serving time, stir thoroughly and drain excess dressing. Makes 48 (3/4 cup) servings.
