I've blended many reviewer suggestions for fried green tomatoes with an ingredient my elderly ex mother-in-law suggested. The result is a sweet, hot combination that delights fried green tomato lovers. Serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing as dip.

½ cup hot sauce
¾ cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 dash grill seasoning
salt and ground black pepper to taste
2 eggs, beaten
½ cup milk
1 cup panko bread crumbs, or as needed
2 green tomatoes, sliced
1 cup vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Put hot sauce in small dish for dipping. Mix flour, brown sugar, grill seasoning, salt, and pepper in a separate small dish. Beat eggs into milk in a third dish. Pour panko in a fourth shallow dish. Arrange dishes in a line, respectively.
  • Dip one side of each tomato slice in hot sauce. Press each side of tomato into flour mixture to coat; dip into milk mixture. Gently press tomato slices into panko to coat. Arrange coated tomatoes on a baking sheet. Refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or a cast-iron skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Fry tomato slices in hot oil until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side.

1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
4 to 6 medium green tomatoes, sliced 1/2 inch thick
1 large egg, beaten
1/4 cup whole milk
1 cup seasoned dry bread crumbs
3 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Steps:

  • Combine sugar and flour; place on a shallow plate. Dip both sides of each tomato slice into the mixture. Combine the egg and milk. Dip each tomato slice; then dip into the bread crumbs. In a skillet, heat butter and oil over medium-high. Fry tomatoes until brown on both sides but firm enough to hold their shape.

1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 egg
1 tablespoon fat-free milk
1 cup cornflake crumbs
4 medium green tomatoes, cut into 1/2-inch slices
1/4 cup canola oil
FRESH TOMATO SALSA:
5 medium red tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1/2 cup minced fresh cilantro
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped
4-1/2 teaspoons lime juice
2 teaspoons sugar
1 garlic clove, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt and cayenne. In another shallow bowl, beat egg and milk. Place cornflake crumbs in a third bowl. Pat green tomato slices dry. Coat with flour mixture, dip into egg mixture, then coat with crumbs., In a large nonstick skillet, heat 4 teaspoons oil over medium heat. Fry tomato slices, four at a time, for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown, adding more oil as needed. Drain on paper towels. , Place fried tomatoes on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375° for 4-5 minutes or until tender. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine salsa ingredients. Serve with the fried tomatoes.

I just reviewed a Sugar Glazed Fried Green Tomato recipe on Zaar and it reminded me of a recipe I use constantly during the summer and it is not posted. My mother stated it was Swedish and my father stated it was German or Bavarian. Very simple and the marinating juice can be used in soups, stews or vegetable pies. Note: You can use raw sugar also. These tomatoes can be added to a simple lettuce salad and no dressing is necessary or served separately with juice drained.

6 -8 large red ripe tomatoes
4 tablespoons white sugar or 4 tablespoons brown sugar
salt
3 teaspoons chopped dill weed
4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
pam olive oil flavored cooking spray
plastic wrap

Steps:

  • Spray Pam or olive oil in pan.
  • Slice tomatoes in 1/2 inch slices.
  • Layer in glass or porclain 9 X 13 pan. Do not use metal.
  • Sprinkle the sugar, salt, dill weed and then spray the vinegar on the first layer.
  • Continue to layer the tomatoes and do the same process until all the tomatoes are in the pan.
  • Cover with towel or plastic wrap. Let set or refrigerate for at least two hours.
  • Drain the juices and use as suggested and serve.
  • Note: A pinch of dill weed with your fingers goes a long way. That is how I sprinkle the dill weed.
  • Cooking time is Marinating time for this recipe.
  • If you want to sprinkle pepper you can.

1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg
1 tablespoon sugar
2 medium green tomatoes (about 1 pound), cored and cut into 1/2-inch-thick wedges
1 cup stone-ground cornmeal
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Freshly ground black pepper
4 slices raw bacon
Vegetable oil for frying

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and sugar. Add the tomatoes and soak for 10 minutes, turning the tomatoes occasionally.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, salt, thyme, and cayenne. Season with pepper. Set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Lay the bacon in the skillet and cook, turning once, until crispy, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel to drain, reserve the bacon fat in the skillet. Pour the oil into skillet to a depth of 1/2 inch and heat until hot.
  • Meanwhile, drain the tomatoes and toss in the cornmeal mixture until well coated. Working in batches if needed, fry the coated tomatoes, turning once, until lightly browned and hot, about 3 minutes the first side, and 2 minutes the second side. Using a slotted spatula or spoon, transfer the tomatoes to a paper-towel lined plate to drain.
  • Arrange the fried tomatoes on a platter and crumble the bacon over the top. Serve immediately.

2 pounds green (unripe) tomatoes (about 4 medium)
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon cayenne
1 large egg
1 tablespoon milk
5 cups cornflakes (about 6 ounces)
1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Accompaniment: fresh tomato salsa

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F.
  • Cut twelve 1/2-inch-thick slices from tomatoes. In a shallow bowl whisk together flour, salt, sugar, and cayenne. In another shallow bowl whisk together egg and milk. In a third shallow bowl coarsely crush cornflakes with hands.
  • Working with 1 tomato slice at a time, dredge in flour, shaking off excess, and dip in egg, letting excess drip off. Coat slices with cornflakes, pressing them to adhere, and arrange slices in one layer on a baking sheet.
  • In a 12-inch nonstick skillet heat 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon oil over moderate heat until foam subsides and fry 3 tomato slices until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. (Be careful not to let cornflakes burn.) Transfer tomatoes to paper towels to drain. Fry remaining tomato slices in remaining butter and oil in same manner. On another baking sheet arrange drained tomato slices in one layer. Bake tomatoes in middle of oven until tender and hot, about 4 minutes.
  • Serve tomatoes topped with salsa.
