This delicious recipe for Whole-Wheat French Toast is perfect to have your kids help in the kitchen. It's super simple to make and we love having it for breakfast and dinner. Get creative by adding some extra ingredients that I share in this post.

5 pieces whole-wheat bread
4 eggs
1/3 cup milk ((or heavy cream))
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
butter (for cooking)
pure maple syrup (for serving)

Steps:

  • Cut the bread into desired shape (we made triangles).
  • Whisk together the eggs, cream or milk, and vanilla in a shallow dish.
  • One-by-one dip the bread into the egg mixture until it is evenly coated on both sides. Let the excess run off before transferring the pieces to a plate.
  • If you have a griddle turn it to 325 degrees F. If you don't have a griddle don't fret...any old sauté pan will do. If using a pan place it over medium heat.
  • Melt a teaspoon or two of butter in your pan/griddle then add the first batch of battered bread. The key is for the finished product to be cooked all the way through by the time the outside turns brown so the heat should not be too high.
  • Cook until golden brown on both sides. Add a little more butter for a second batch if necessary. Serve warm with pure maple syrup and a side of fruit. Enjoy!

2 large eggs
1 cup milk, of choice
2 tablespoons maple syrup, plus more for serving
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
salt, to taste
8 slices whole wheat bread
powdered sugar, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat Griddler, fitted with the griddle plates, to 375°F (190°C), and grease with nonstick spray.
  • Use a whisk to beat the eggs in a 9x13-inch (23x33-cm) casserole dish until smooth.
  • Add the milk, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt, and whisk until smooth and well combined.
  • Dunk the bread in the batter, 4 slices at a time, until just soaked. Do not let the bread soak in the wet ingredients too long or it will become too wet and fall apart when you attempt to pick it up.
  • Transfer the soaked bread to the Griddler and cook for 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar, drizzle with maple syrup, and serve.
  • Enjoy!

1 medium papaya
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch salt
4 slices whole grain bread (1/2 to 3/4 inch thick)
1/2 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus additional, if necessary
Maple syrup, for serving, optional

Steps:

  • 1. Peel the papaya and cut it in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to remove the seeds. Slice the papaya into cubes (you should have about 1 cup).
  • 2. In a large shallow bowl whisk together the milk, egg, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, soaking both sides so that the bread is well coated and has absorbed the custard.
  • 3. Melt the butter in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the bread and cook, working in batches, if necessary, until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Add additional butter to the pan if the bread seems to be sticking.
  • 4. Transfer the French toast to two serving plates and drizzle with maple syrup, if desired. Top with the chopped papaya and serve.

3 cups frozen unsweetened blueberries
8 slices whole multi grain bread
1 teaspoon cornstarch

Steps:

  • 1. In a wide-bottom bowl, toss eggs, vanilla, milk, and cinnamon lightly with a fork until scrambled. Preheat griddle to medium high. 2. Place blueberries in a microwave-safe bowl and cook on high for 4 minutes. (These will eventually cook down to about 1½ cups.) 3. Once the griddle is hot, coat with non-stick cooking spray. Dip bread in egg mixture, one by one, just until each side is completely coated and place on hot griddle. Cook until brown (about 1-2 minutes) then flip and cook 1 minute on second side. If your griddle only accommodates 4 slices at a time, repeat process with the remaining 4. 4. Meanwhile, stir cornstarch into the warm blueberry liquid. Cook 2 minutes more, until thick and bubbly. 5. Serve each person two slices of French Toast with approximately 1/3 cup blueberry topping. 6 slices Roman Meal Bread
1 serving Nonstick cooking spray
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest
18 (1 inch) cubes fresh fruit (kiwi, pineapple, mango)
6 (6 inch) bamboo skewers
½ tablespoon Yogurt and honey

Steps:

  • Combine eggs, milk and vanilla extract in shallow bowl; mix well. Combine sugar and lemon zest in small bowl; set aside.
  • Trim crusts and cut each piece of bread into quarters for a total of 24 pieces.
  • Spray large skillet with nonstick cooking spray; heat over medium heat. Dip bread pieces in egg mixture, coating both sides. Place in skillet and cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden brown. Cook on second side for 1 to 2 minutes or until golden brown.

3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup water
3 egg whites (from large eggs)
3 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 slices whole wheat bread, sliced thick
1/2 cup pure maple syrup

Steps:

  • Place milk, water & egg whites in a blender & mix well.
  • Add brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon & salt, blending until smooth, then pour into a shallow bowl & set aside.
  • Put butter in a large frying pan & heat over medium heat, being careful not to burn the butter.
  • Soak each slice of bread in the egg mixture for about 30 seconds, then remove & place in the heated pan.
  • Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until the bottom is brown, then using a spatula, turn the each slice of bread over & cook the other side another 3 minutes.
  • Serve quickly, drizzled with syrup.

3 tablespoons unsalted butter for frying
Accompaniments:

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 250° F.
  • In a large shallow baking dish whisk together eggs, orange juice, milk, liqueur, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Add 4 bread slices and soak 2 minutes. Turn slices over and soak 2 minutes more. Transfer soaked bread slices to a tray and repeat procedure with remaining 4 bread slices.
  • In a large heavy skillet heat 1 1/2 tablespoons butter over moderate heat until foam subsides and cook half of coated bread slices until golden, about 3 minutes on each side. Transfer French toast as cooked to a baking sheet and keep warm in oven. Cook remaining bread slices in same manner.
  • Dust French toast with confectioners' sugar and serve with syrup.
